“Contemporary Christian Music, Under The Spotlight” is exactly what the title implies. It is an impressive review of contemporary “Christian” music, an analysis of its contents, and a thorough documentation of its errors. It consists of an introduction about the importance of music, the power of music, and the dangers of music. It then proceeds to list six characteristics of contemporary “Christian” music…
Its unscriptural philosophy
Its sensual rhythms | |
Its ecumenism | |
Its charismatic associations
Its weak, unscriptural message
Its worldliness |
Part two consists of dealing with an extensive list
(23) of questions and issues that surround the theme of church music and
“Christian” music. Some of
these are…
Isn’t music neutral? | |
Isn’t the sincerity of the musicians the important thing?
Isn’t the issue of music just a matter of different tastes?
Shouldn’t we use rock to reach kids?
What about all the young people being “saved” through
contemporary “Christian” music?
If rock music is demonic why would the devil sing about Jesus Christ? |
The author provides sound and concise answers to all
these questions and includes a scriptural argument with a proof text to nail
down his point.
Part III is a brief section that gives advice
to churches how to deal with this issue. Part
IV, which is by far the longest is also one of its most valuable sections.
It contains what appears to be an almost exhaustive list of all the
contemporary Christian music groups and musicians.
It catalogues their history, the lifestyle of the performers, the
doctrine of their songs, and their musical styles.
The author presents a mountain of evidence of the worldliness, heresy,
and corruptions of this pseudo-Christian movement and its abysmal and appalling
regurgitation of the worst of the cultural dregs of our age.
This book is an excellent resource for anyone
confronted with this issue, “and who isn’t?”
It’s only weakness is that is written by and for Fundamentalists. It
therefore, unfortunately, ignores entirely the issue of using the Psalter as the
divinely inspired hymnbook of the church as the best solution to the invasion of
worldly music into the churches. Similarly,
it ignores the historic Reformed position with respect to instrumental music in
the public worship of God. So
although it properly reacts to the worldliness and wickedness of this music, it
is oblivious to the divinely appointed solutions.
